Mentorship

What a good mentor actually does in one session

Not advice. Not a pep talk. A working session with someone who has already solved your exact problem.

Most people expect a mentorship session to feel like a motivational talk. It rarely does, and it should not.

A good session starts with a specific, narrow problem, not "how do I get better at my career" but "here is the resume I am sending out this week, tell me what is wrong with it." The mentor works the actual artifact in front of them, the resume, the code, the pitch deck, rather than talking in generalities.

This is the difference between advice and mentorship. Advice is cheap and available everywhere. Mentorship is someone who has done the specific thing you are trying to do, looking at your specific attempt, and telling you exactly what to change.
