Why most career advice online is generic, and how to tell

If the advice would apply equally to a designer, an engineer, and an accountant, it is not really advice.

Search "how to switch careers" and you will find thousands of nearly identical articles: network more, update your LinkedIn, learn to code. None of it is wrong, and none of it is useful, because none of it accounts for the field you are actually trying to enter.

Real guidance is field-specific and often counterintuitive. The way into product management is different from the way into data science, which is different again from the way into investment banking. A mentor who has actually made that specific move can tell you which of the generic advice matters and which of it is noise.
